Dr. Joanna Ashworth is the former director of Dialogue Programs, at the Centre for Dialogue, Simon Fraser University where she led innovative dialogue-learning projects and programs. For more than 20 years she has worked in the interwoven fields of communication and adult education – in educational planning, community development, and management positions with the United Nations in Latin America, then with Vancouver Community College, the Open Learning Agency, UBC, and Vancity. Seeking new ways to communicate and educate through media has led her to produce documentaries for television, video and audiotape for diverse types of learning needs. Joanna’s research interests include innovations in leadership education, dialogue and deliberation as hermeneutics, and uncovering tacit knowledge through reflective practice and narrative. She is the author of numerous publications, including Cultivating Dialogue. Joanna is currently co-directing SFU project Engaging Diaspora in Development: Tapping the Translocal Potential for Change as well as provides leadership to community dialogues on multiculturalism around British Columbia through her work with EmbraceBC.
Co-Director, International Development
Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, Shaheen moved to Vancouver in 1989. She is the Director, International Development and Faculty Engagement and has worked to develop, support and implement international development projects at SFU for 13 years. Shaheen holds a Bachelors degree in Business and Liberal Studies from SFU, a certificate in Intercultural Communication from the University of British Columbia, and a Diploma in French from the Alliance Française. She is currently pursuing an MA in International Studies at SFU. Shaheen has served as the Project Director or Project Coordinator on several development projects in Africa and Asia funded by CIDA and ADB. She has worked as a consultant for the British Columbia Centre for International Education (BCCIE) as a writer and researcher for the HRDC-funded Canada/Asia and the Pacific Mobility Study for Phases I & II. International assignments have brought her to Cambodia, Ghana, Hong Kong, Italy, Kenya, Laos, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Shaheen is committed to giving back to developing countries, and to facilitating access to quality education for those that are traditionally barred from such opportunities. Her goal is to enable universities and faculty to gain recognition for and utilize their research and expertise in development while contributing to the crucial internationalization of their institution.
